Muffler: Description and Operation
Muffler (With Variable Flow Rate System)
By integrating a valve into the muffler, it was possible to reduce exhaust noise at low engine speeds and to improve engine performance at high engine
speeds without enlarging muffler volume. The variable flow rate exhaust system is a simple mechanism that uses no sensors, controllers or actuators.
Opening and closing of the variable valve is controlled by exhaust gas pressure.
At low engine speeds:
Because of the low flow-rate of the exhaust gas, the valve will be closed; causing the gas to flow through passage 1. This causes higher exhaust gas
backpressure, which dampens exhaust noise.
At high engine speeds:
The higher exhaust gas flow-rate causes the valve to open, allowing the gas to flow through passages 1 and 2. Exhaust gas backpressure is decreased,
giving better engine performance.
