Fuel Pressure Regulator: Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Before performing service on the fuel system, relieve system pressure by covering the hose connection at the cold start valve with a clean rag

and loosening slowly.  

1.

Disconnect fuel line from cold start valve and connect to fuel pressure gauge.

NOTE: Gauge must be able to measure up to 103 psi (7 bar).

Start engine and observe pressure reading.

Should be 89 - 95 psi (6.1 - 6.5 bar).

If system pressure is too high, turn engine "OFF", disconnect fuel return line from differential pressure regulator and direct end of hose into a
suitable container. Start engine and observe pressure reading.

3.

If system pressure is now OK, check for pinched or restricted fuel return line. If pressure is still too high with return line disconnected, replace
pressure regulator.

4.

If system pressure is too low in step 2 of this procedure, turn engine "OFF" and check for the following:

Plugged or restricted fuel filter or mini filter (fuel inlet banjo bolt on fuel distributor).

^

Pinched or restricted fuel line from fuel pump to fuel distributor.

^

Faulty fuel pump pressure relief valve or defective pump.

^

Plugged or restricted fuel pick-up screen in tank.

If these check out OK, replace pressure regulator.

RESIDUAL PRESSURE CHECKING

5.

If system pressure is OK, turn engine off and check residual fuel system pressure on gauge after 10 minutes and after 20 minutes.

^

After 10 minutes - 48 psi (3.3 bar) minimum.

^

After 20 minutes - 46 psi (3.2 bar) minimum.

If residual pressure is less than specified, check for:

^

Leaking fuel pump check valve. 

^

Leaking cold start valve.

^

Insufficient air flow sensor plate free play.

^

Leaking control plunger seal (fuel leaking into air filter box from fuel distributor).

^

Leaking fuel system connections or leaking injectors.

If these check out OK, replace fuel pressure regulator.
