Barometric Pressure Sensor: Testing and Inspection

CIS-E III Control Unit Harness Connectors (Pin # Locations)

 
    There is no information available describing a specific testing procedure (static or dynamic) for this device. Testing is therefor limited to a process of
elimination by checking reference voltages and ground at the harness connector for this sensor. This procedure is based on the premise that something is
wrong with the altitude sensor circuit (either a fault code 2223 was displayed, or there is sufficient reason to believe the altitude sensor is causing a
driveability problem; i.e. engine runs poorly only at high altitudes).
 

1.

Remove harness connector from altitude sensor.

2.

Turn ignition "on".

3.

Check voltage between harness connector terminal #1 and ground.

DVM should read approx. 5 volts, if not check for open or grounded circuit between sensor connector terminal #1 and fuel control unit
terminal #25. Check also for possible grounded circuit between fuel control unit terminal #25 and ignition control unit terminal #2.

4.

Check voltage between sensor connector terminals #1 and #3 (testing for sensor ground).

DVM should read 4.5-5.0 volts, if not check for open circuit between sensor connector terminal #3 and ground.

Check voltage between terminals #2 and #3

DVM should read 4.5-5.0 volts, if not check for open or grounded circuit between sensor connector terminal #2 and ignition control unit
terminal #21. Also check for grounded circuit between fuel control unit terminal #26 and ignition control unit terminal #21, or between fuel
control unit terminal #26 and air flow sensor potentiometer terminal #1.

 
If no open or grounded circuits are found, yet stated voltage values are not obtained, then replace fuel control unit.
 
If all voltage and circuit tests are OK, yet a problem with the altitude sensor is still suspected, replace with a known good sensor and see if that fixes the
problem.
 
Some sensors share reference voltage sources or attenuate signals from other sensors. If code 2223 was displayed along with any other code(s), check all
indicated circuits before replacing any parts.
