EGR Electronic Vacuum Regulator Solenoid: Description and Operation

EGR Frequency Valve

    The EGR frequency valve, mounted either on the cylinder head or on the vacuum reservoir, regulates the amount of vacuum applied to the EGR valve.
It is an electrically operated solenoid valve with an integral membrane valve which limits the vacuum supplied to the frequency valve portion of the
device to not more than 6.0" Hg (200 millibar) maximum. The frequency valve normally vents the EGR port side of the valve to atmospheric pressure in
the intake air boot, and blocks the vacuum source port. When the valve's solenoid is energized, the atmospheric port is blocked and the vacuum port is
opened to the EGR port, supplying vacuum to the EGR valve. The frequency valve operates on a duty cycle signal (on time vs. off time) from the ECU,
and will operate only when the engine coolant temperature is greater than 122~F (50~C). The ECU varies the duty cycle depending on engine speed and
load, to regulate the amount of exhaust gas recirculated into the intake system. The greater the duty cycle signal (more on time vs. off time per cycle), the
more exhaust is recirculated.
