Camshaft Alignment With Cylinder Head Cover Removed

Install both camshafts with chain so markings on chain sprockets align as shown in Fig. 5.

Proceed as follows for intake camshaft:
a. Install and tighten bearing caps 6, 8 and 10 alternately and diagonally to specifications. When installing bearing caps, ensure notch or

recessed corners on bearing caps face toward intake side of cylinder head.

b. Install bearing cap in front of drive chain and caps 7 and 9 and tighten to specifications. When installing bearing caps, ensure notch or

recessed corners on bearing caps face toward intake side of cylinder head.

Proceed as follows for exhaust camshaft:
a. Install and tighten bearing caps 1, 3 and 5 alternately and diagonally to specifications. When installing bearing caps, ensure notch or

recessed corners on bearing caps face toward intake side of cylinder head.

b. Install bearing cap in front of drive chain and caps 2 and 4 and tighten to specifications. When installing bearing caps, ensure notch or

recessed corners on bearing caps face toward intake side of cylinder head.

Install camshaft sprocket and tighten to specifications, then install timing belt around water pump sprocket camshaft sprocket and idler pulley. 
Ensure mark on camshaft sprocket aligns with arrow on cylinder head and TDC mark O with cast mark on bell housing.

Install distributor.

Adjust belt tension by turning water pump counterclockwise, then tighten water pump bolts to specifications. Belt is tensioned correctly when
belt can be twisted 90° in center between camshaft and intermediate sprockets.

14.

Turn engine over slowly and carefully by hand several times to ensure valves do not contact pistons for any reason.

15.

Install cylinder head cover, intake manifold and upper timing belt cover.
