Valve Clearance Adjustment

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

1.

Adjust valves with engine warm (at least 35°C/95°F).

2.

Remove accelerator linkage and valve cover.

3.

Using a remote starter, bump starter until cam lobes of cylinder to be adjusted point upward. Do not turn camshaft by mounting bolt. This may
damage the timing belt, causing premature failure.

4.

Measure valve clearances with feeler gauge. Valve clearance should be:

Intake -- 0.20 - 0.30 mm (.008-.012 in.) 
Exhaust -- 0.40 - 0.50 mm (.016-.020 in.)

5.

Turn cam followers so that notches are accessible when tool is depressed.

6.

Depress cam follower (tool 2078 or equivalent), then remove adjusting disc with shim pliers (tool US4476 or equivalent).

7.

If measured clearance exceeds specifications, remove adjusting shim and install a thicker one.

8.

If measured clearance is less than specifications, remove adjusting shim and install a thinner one. Thickness of adjusting shim is etched on one
side. When installing disc, markings must be face down.
