Compression Test

CHECKING COMPRESSION

Compression should be checked before every engine tune-up to make sure there are no valve or piston ring problems which will cause the engine to run
poorly even after being correctly tuned up.

Run engine until radiator is warm.
Remove spark plugs.
Insert compression gauge fitting in # 1 spark plug hole.
Operate starter with throttle open until gauge reaches highest reading.
Repeat procedure on remaining cylinders:

Make sure to release pressure in gauge between checks.

Readings should all be between 107-184 psi (4 cyl.), 100-170 psi (5 cyl.) and not more than 42 psi apart.

Low readings on adjacent cylinders can mean gasket leakage between cylinders.
Low reading on one cylinder usually means valve leakage.
Low readings on all cylinders could mean worn piston rings.
A low cylinder can be checked again after squirting about a tablespoon of engine oil on to the piston through the spark plug hole:

If the compression reading remains low during the second check, the cause is probably burnt or improperly seated valves. If the second reading
increases, piston rings are probably worn.
