Valve Clearance Checking

CHECKING VALVE CLEARANCE

When a valve is closed, there must be enough clearance in the opening mechanism to ensure that the valve remains on its seat regardless of engine
temperature or metal expansion.

Proper valve clearance prevents warped and burned valves by ensuring that combustion heat in the valve head is dissipated through the valve seat and
cylinder head whenever the valve is closed.

Also, modern camshafts are ground with opening and closing "ramps" to ensure quiet, long-life valve operation as long as valve clearance is correct.

Run engine until radiator is warm.
Remove valve cover.
Turn engine until both cam lobes of cylinder to be checked point upward.
Insert proper feeler gauges between cam lobe and cam follower:

intake - 0.20 mm gauge should pass thru (.008 in.)

0.30 mm gauge should not pass thru (.012 in.)

exhaust - 0.40 mm gauge should pass thru (.016 in.)

0.50 mm gauge should not pass thru (.020 in.)

Repeat procedure on remaining cylinders. Adjust in cylinder firing order, 1-3-4-2.

If valve clearance is incorrect:

Depress both cam followers with lever (VW 546).
Remove shim to be exchanged with special pliers (10-208).
Install propersize shim:

clearance too small - use thinner shim
clearance too large - use thicker shim

Remove lever. 
Re-check valve clearance.
