Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

REAR

1.

Remove transmission from vehicle.

2.

Remove flywheel.

3.

Using suitable tool, remove oil seal.

4.

Reverse procedure to install, coating sealing lips of new seal with oil.

FRONT

1.

Remove fan belt, then the upper drive belt cover.

2.

Set crankshaft at TDC.

3.

Remove fan belt pulley and loosen drive belt sprocket. When removing drive belt sprocket bolt and pulley, ensure that flywheel is securely
locked in place.

4.

Remove water pump pulley, then the lower drive belt cover.

5.

Loosen drive belt and remove belt and drive belt sprocket as an assembly.

6.

Reverse procedure to install noting the following: 

a. Insert bolt of tool 3083 or equivalent in crankshaft to guide seal extractor tool 2085 or equivalent and remove old oil seal.
b. Slide sleeve of tool 3083 or equivalent onto crankcase journal.
c. Dip new seal in engine oil and slide over sleeve.
d. Slide thrust sleeve over guide sleeve and press in seal with thrust sleeve and bolt until fully seated.
