Oxygen Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1.

Connect differential pressure regulator test harness (VW 1315A/1), Fig. 7, between the harness plug and the differential pressure regulator and
hook up a multi-meter set for 20 mA to the test harness.

Remove the plug from the coolant temp. sensor and connect the terminals together (use adapter VW 1490 or equivalent).

Unplug oxygen sensor.

With ignition switched ON, observe meter reading.  Current values should be as shown in Fig. 4.

With the male connector (green wire) of the oxygen sensor lead grounded, the differential pressure regulator current should increase about 10 mA
within 20 seconds.

Remove the oxygen sensor wire from ground and the current should stabilize within 10 seconds.

7.

If the current values are not within specification;

a. Check circuit between control unit terminal 8, and oxygen sensor.
b. Check circuit between control unit terminal 21, and coolant temp sensor.

If wiring , oxygen sensor, and coolant temp sensor are OK, replace control unit.
