Air Flow Sensor Potentiometer

The air flow sensor potentiometer is factory adjusted, and the bolts are sealed to indicate any tampering.  If the potentiometer must be replaced,
adjustment must be done with great care. 

1.

Connect test harness Fig. 8 (VW 1501), or test leads that will allow accurate voltage and resistance measurement, to the potentiometer.

2.

With the sensor plate in the rest position (1.9 +/- 0.15 mm / 0.074 +/- 0.005 in below the cone edge of the air venturi), and the engine harness
disconnected, resistance across the potentiometer terminals should be:

Between 1 and 2 -- more than 4K ohms
Between 2 and 3 -- less than 1K ohm
Between 2 and 3 (lifting sensor plate evenly) -- resistance should increase evenly to more than 4K ohms.

3.

If the wiring is suspected of being faulty, the wiring from the potentiometer plug to the control unit plug are:

Potentiometer plug       Control unit plug

1 .................................. 18
2 .................................. 17
3 .................................. 14

The top terminal on the potentiometer is #1. 

4.

If resistance values are not within specification, adjust or replace the potentiometer.
