Free play is the clearance between the control plunger and the sensor plate lever.  It is measured on the side of the sensor plate closest to the fuel
distributor, between the top of the sensor plate and the lower edge of the venturi cone.

1.

Remove the fuel pump relay and install a jumper wire to energize the fuel pump, Fig. 24.

2.

Run the fuel pump for about 10 seconds.

3.

Lift the sensor plate lightly, until a resistance is felt (sensor arm contacting the control plunger), and measure the distance traveled.

a. Minimum play is 1 mm (0.040 in)
b. Maximum play is 2 mm (0.080 in)

4.

If free play is not within specification;

a. Remove all fuel lines and electrical connections to fuel distributor.
b. Remove the three screws that mount the fuel distributor to the air flow sensor.
c. Remove the fuel distributor and set it upside down on a clean bench.
