Front Axle - Cracking Noises

Cause:

Wheel bearing noise. Loud metallic crack when changing direction or when driving off with steering wheel turned (axial load).

Production Change:

Bearing/housing interference increased (Audi 4000 only).

Larger wheel bearings (82 mm instead of 75 mm outside diameter) with greater interference.

Service Solution:

In case of persistent complaints, install tapered roller bearing.

P/N 321 498 625D - Audi 4000 P/N 443 498 625 - Audi 5000 with 75 mm outside diameter

NOTE:

DO NOT coat bearing seat with Molycote.
