Shift Linkage: Adjustments

SELECTOR LEVER, ADJUST

AUDI 80/90, 4000 & QUATTRO

1.

Remove console.

2.

Shift selector lever into P position.

3.

Loosen cable clamp nut.

4.

Move transaxle shift lever to P position stop.

5.

Torque cable clamp nut to 6 ft.lbs. and install console.

ACCELERATOR & KICKDOWN LINKAGE, ADJUST

1984-87 AUDI 4000

    Accelerator controls must be adjusted so that transaxle operating lever is at ``no throttle'' position with throttle closed. If adjustment is incorrect, shift
speeds will be too high at part throttle and line pressure will be too high at idle.

Models W/Type 087 Transaxle

1.

Start engine and run until it reaches normal operating temperature, ensure accelerator is in idle position and that throttle is closed, then stop engine.

2.

Place selector lever at ``P,'' set parking brake and block drive wheels.

3.

Loosen pedal cable adjusting nut at transaxle.

4.

Remove retaining clips securing push/pull rods to relay levers, then disconnect push/pull rods.

5.

Rotate pull rod relay lever counterclockwise to stop, hold in this position and adjust ball socket on pull rod until socket slips easily over ball stud
on relay lever.

6.

Reconnect push/pull rods to relay lever and secure with retaining clips.

7.

Loosen adjusting nut on pushrod at transaxle, adjust pushrod so that transaxle lever is in ``no throttle'' position and throttle body lever is against
stop, then tighten adjusting nut. Ensure pushrod fits easily on transaxle operating lever.

8.

Loosen locknut (lower nut) securing cable to bracket.

9.

Have helper depress and hold accelerator pedal against floor stop, then adjust cable with upper nut until transaxle operating lever moves upward
(toward cable bracket) to stop, then tighten lower locknut.

10.

Check operation as follows: 

a. Push throttle lever against idle stop and observe transaxle operating lever. Lever must be in ``no throttle'' position.
b. Push accelerator pedal to full throttle position (without kickdown). Throttle valve lever must contact full throttle stop and kickdown spring in

pushrod must not be compressed.

c. Fully depress accelerator pedal. Transaxle operating lever must contact stop and kickdown spring in pushrod should be compressed 13/32

inch (10.5 mm).

Models W/Type 089 Transaxle

1.

Start engine and run until it reaches normal operating temperature, ensure accelerator is in idle position and that throttle is closed, then stop engine.

2.

Place selector lever at ``P,'' set parking brake and block drive wheels.

3.

Loosen cable adjusting nut (upper nut) at transaxle.

4.

Loosen locknuts securing throttle cable to bracket on valve cover.

5.

Pull throttle cable sleeve away from lever until resistance is felt, ensuring that throttle valve remains closed and transaxle lever is in ``no throttle''
position, and hold in this position.

6.

Tighten throttle cable adjusting nut against bracket on valve cover, then secure adjustment by torquing locknut to 7 ft.lbs.

7.

Back off on locknut securing kickdown cable to transaxle bracket (lower nut), then have helper depress accelerator pedal and hold it against floor
stop.

8.

Tighten kickdown cable adjusting nut (upper nut) until transaxle lever moves to stop, then tighten locknut and release accelerator pedal.

9.

Check adjustment as follows: 

a. Hold throttle lever against idle stop and observe transaxle lever. Lever should be in ``no throttle'' position.
b. Depress accelerator pedal to full throttle position (no kickdown). Throttle lever should contact full throttle stop, but spring in kickdown cable

ball socket housing should not be compressed.

c. Fully depress accelerator pedal against floor stop. Transaxle lever should contact stop and spring in kickdown cable should be compressed
