Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Driveshaft Replace

4000 & COUPE

Models Less Stabilizer Link Rod

1.

Remove wheel cover and remove nut securing axle shaft in hub.

2.

Raise and support front of vehicle and remove front wheels.

3.

Remove screws securing drive shaft flange to transmission.

4.

Mark position of ball joint on control arm and disconnect ball joint from control arm.

5.

Remove drive shaft from hub and remove from vehicle while holding pivot mounting outward.

6.

Install axle shaft end of drive shaft through front hub and position shaft in installed position.

7.

Bring ball joint into position as marked with tool, Fig. 1, and torque nuts to 47 ft.lbs.

8.

Install bolts securing drive shaft flange to transmission and torque to 33 ft.lbs.

9.

Install wheels and lower vehicle to ground.

10.

Install nut securing axle shaft in front hub and torque to 167 ft.lbs.

Models With Stabilizer Link Rod

1.

Remove wheel cover, then the axle nut.

2.

Loosen lug nuts, then raise and support vehicle and remove wheel.

3.

Disconnect driveshaft at transmission flange and angle driveshaft upward along side transmission.

4.

Using suitable puller, press driveshaft out of hub and remove driveshaft. Use only mechanical or hydraulic hub puller to remove stub axle. Do
not heat wheel bearing housing or wheel bearing. When installing driveshaft, ensure that splines on driveshaft and wheel hub are free of
oil, grease and old locking compound.

5.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following: 

a. Apply a bead of suitable locking compound not more than 1/4 inch wide around splines of driveshaft and allow to harden for at least one

hour.

b. Replace gasket on inner constant velocity joint.
