Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVING

CAUTION:

All linings on one axle should be replaced at same time. Use linings of same quality.

Rear Drum Brake, Self-Adjusting

1. Raise and support vehicle, remove rear wheels.
2. Remove dust cap, cotter pin, wheel nut cover and wheel nut, then the thrust washer and outer wheel bearing.
3. Remove brake drum as follows.

Insert screwdriver in wheel bolt hole and pry up on wedge until stop.

4. Remove spring retainers from shoe retaining springs by pressing retainer against spring, then rotate 90°.
5. Unhook lower return spring.
6. Lift shoes off backing plate
7. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever.
8. Clamp shoes in vise.
