Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Girling Type

CAUTION:

When re-using brake pads, mark to prevent changing inside to outside or from one caliper to another. Mixed pads can cause uneven braking.

1. Place wooden block between caliper piston and caliper housing. Then apply compressed air to brake line bore using only enough pressure to force

piston from housing.

2. Remove piston seal from caliper piston bore using a plastic rod.

NOTE:

If either caliper piston or caliper piston bore is corroded, pitted or scored, affected part must be replaced.

3. Slide dust cap onto piston, then lubricate piston and caliper piston bore lightly with a suitable brake cylinder paste.
4. Install piston seal into caliper bore, then lubricate with clean brake fluid.
5. Install piston into caliper bore and insert inner lip of dust cap into groove on caliper.
6. Open bleeder screw, then press caliper piston into caliper as far as possible, ensuring outer lip of dust cap slips into groove in piston.
