Dear Audi Owner:

The fact that you chose to buy an Audi makes your opinion and goodwill important to us. We want you to be pleased and confident about your car.
Recently, the media have given attention to stories of "unintended acceleration" on certain Audi 5000 series vehicles equipped with automatic
transmissions. We want you to be fully informed of the action Audi has taken, and will continue to take, regarding this situation.

For the past several months, we have been investigating, wherever possible, any reported incidents of "unintended acceleration" in Audi vehicies.  In
addition, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a wide range of makes and
models of vehicles sold by a number of automobile manufacturers, including Audi. We are cooperating in that investigation as well.

Audi's investigations found no evidence of mechanical defects which could explain the reports of acceleration combined with loss of brake function.
None of the investigators have been able to duplicate the unintended acceleration reported by drivers. For example, checks on cars where brake failure
was reported showed brakes and brake lights operating normally.

The lack of any evidence of mechanical failure led Audi to closely examine other possible causes. Audi believes that unintended acceleration occurs
when drivers inadvertently press the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal when shifting out of "park."

Audi has developed an electro-mechanical device which it is confident will resolve the problem. The device will prevent the transmission shift selector
from being moved from "park" to "drive," or "park" to "reverse" unless the brake pedal is depressed. Before starting your car it should always be in
"park," never neutral. This is the vehicle starting practice recommended by experts.

The heart of the device is a solenoid control which will be installed inside the transmission shift selector lever console.  It will be connected to the brake
light electrical circuit. This Automatic Shift Lock operates a mechanical stop in the "park" position of the automatic transmission.
New parts are now being placed in production and will be available at your dealership by the end of September. Please arrange an appointment with your
dealer after that date so that the new component can be fitted to your vehicle free of charge.
