Modifications have been made to the rear window defogger since the start of production for the 1984 Model Year.

When the defogger button is pushed, the red indicator light above the push button will come on and current flows to the rear window heating
elements.

^

After approximately 10 minutes the indicator light will go off but the heating elements continue to receive current until the ignition is switched off.

^

Turning off the defogger switch will not interrupt current to the rear window during this time.

A 6 pin relay, Part No. 171 959 143A, is used for this system, which has been in production as of VIN 44 EN 008473.

Note Do not install indicator bulb in socket which is located in instrument cluster. It is not compatible with this system. This system cannot be retrofitted
to previously built vehicles.
