Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
Installation of Filter Warmer

NOTE:  On all vehicles with diesel engine it is possible to retro-fit a fuel filter with control valve and check valve which will redirect warm fuel from the
fuel injection pump to the fuel filter. This modification, together with the use of winter diesel fuel, enables fuel system operation to temperatures as low
as -25°C (-13°F). The addition of gasoline to the diesel fuel is then no longer necessary.

OPERATION

-

The control valve in the fuel return line opens at about 15°C (59°F) and allows warm fuel from the fuel injection pump to flow directly into the
filter.

-

When fuel temperature has increased to about 25°C (77°F), the control valve will close and the direct flow of fuel to the filter will be cut off.

-

The check valve in the return line prevents air being drawn in through the return line when the control valve is open.

INSTALLING

-

remove existing fuel filter complete with upper part

-

remove fuel supply hose (with banjo union) from between fuel line and filter

-

install 0-ring

-

install control valve and secure with retaining clip

-

1 - supply from fuel tank

-

2 - supply to injection pump

-

3 - return from injection pump

-

4 - return to fuel tank

NOTE:  If the control valve is damaged during installation, the engine will start after installation but additional fuel will not be drawn up (through
the transparent hose). In this case, replace the control valve.

install fuel filter with new bracket and connect fuel hoses as follows

FUEL SUPPLY HOSE 1

-

connect new fuel hose (7 x 3 x 220mm)

FUEL RETURN HOSE 2

-

remove existing fuel return hose from injection pump to fuel return line

-

bend fuel return line toward fuel supply line

-

install new fuel return hose (2 - 5 x 3 x 230mm) between the fuel line and the control valve (side marked with arrow indicating direction of flow)
