Ignition Coil: Description and Operation
Ignition Coil
The electronic ignition system requires an ignition coil with different internal construction and resistance values than a coil used in a breaker point
ignition system.
The electronic control unit allows more current flow through the primary circuit. This greater current flow allows a stronger electromagnetic field to be
built-up within the coil. When the electronic control unit stops the primary current flow the magnetic field collapses and induces a voltage surge in the
secondary windings of the coil.
Care must be taken to insure that the proper components are used during repairs due to the different operational characteristics and testing values. Failure
to match components could cause poor performance and electrical component damage.
