Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Disassembly and Assembly

Refer to Fig. 3, during service procedures.
1.
When disassembling driveshaft, note the following:
a. Use pliers to loosen or tighten clamps.
b. When removing outer CV joint, spread circlip, then drive joint off shaft by tapping lightly with a copper drift.
c. When removing inner CV joint, use tool VW 161a or equivalent, to remove circlip, then use tools VW408a and VW402 or equivalents, to
press joint off shaft.
d. CV joints are replaced as complete units.
2.
When assembling driveshaft, note the following:
a. Always install new boot clamps and circlips. Check boots for cracks or wear, replace if necessary.
b. Using a plastic hammer, drive outer CV joint onto shaft until circlip is engaged in shaft groove.
c. Press inner CV joint onto shaft until circlips can be can be pressed into groove. Chamfer on inside diameter of ball hub (splines) must face
contact shoulder on drive shaft.
d. Note position of dished washer.
e. Vehicles with attached wheel bearing housings and 4 cylinder engines require 90 grams of G6 grease for each CV joint when reinstalling
