Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Testing and Inspection
Operational Tests

1.

Before testing:

a. Engine should be at normal operating temperature (80°C/176°F).
b. Throttle valve idle position set correctly.
c. Throttle switches OK.
d. Thermo switch and/or coolant temperature sensor OK.
e. All electrical consumers switched OFF.
f.

A/C switched OFF.

g. Fuel pressure gauge must not be connected.
h. Radiator fan must not be running while performing tests.
i.

If one or more injectors have been replaced, or if the fuel system has been opened for any reason, accelerate engine to 3000 rpm several times
and let idle for at least two minutes to purge system of trapped air before performing tests.

2.

Connect test harness VW 1315 A/1 between the idle control valve and the engine harness plug.

3.

Connect a multimeter to the test harness, and set on 2A scale.

4.

With ignition ON, idle control valve current should be 525 - 575 mA.

5.

If 430 mA is measured, check for open circuit between ignition control unit and terminal 1 of ignition coil.

6.

If 0 mA is measured;

a. Check for open circuit between control unit and thermoswitch.
b. Check for defective coolant temperature sensor.
c. Check for an open or short circuit between the control unit and the idle control valve.
d. Check for a defective idle control valve.
e. Check for a faulty control unit.
