Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Driveshaft Service

80/90 MODELS

When disassembling driveshaft, note the following:

a. Always use suitable pliers to loosen or tighten clamps.
b. When removing outer CV joint, spread circlip and drive joint off shaft by tapping lightly with a copper drift.
c. When removing inner CV joint, use tool VW 161a to remove circlip, then use tools VW408a and VW402 to press joint off shaft.
d. CV joints are replaced as complete units.

When assembling driveshaft, note the following: 

a. Always install new boot clamps and circlips. Check boots for cracks or wear and replace if necessary.
b. Using a plastic hammer, drive outer CV joint onto shaft until circlip is engaged in groove in shaft.
c. Using suitable tools, press inner CV joint onto shaft until circlips can be can be pressed into groove. Chamfer on inside diameter of ball

hub (splines) must face contact shoulder on drive shaft.

d. Note position of dished washer.
e. Vehicles with attached wheel bearing housings and 4 cylinder engines require 90 grams of G6 grease for each CV joint when reinstalling or

replacing boot. Quattro models and 4 cylinder two wheel drive models with separate wheel bearing housings require 90 grams of G6 grease
per CV joint. 5 cylinder two wheel drive models with separate wheel bearing housings require 120 grams of G6 grease for the inner CV joint
and 90 grams G6 grease for the outer CV joint.

Boots will sometimes be pressed in when installed, causing a vacuum inside the boot which in turn leads to an inward fold when vehicle is
driven. To correct this condition, lift small diameter end of boot to equalize pressure, allowing boot to regain normal shape.
