Idle Speed: Adjustments

NOTE
The idle speed and CO content are inter-related and must be checked and adjusted together.

Requirements:

Perform vehicle self-diagnosis, and note any fault codes.
Engine at normal operating temperature 80°C (176°F).
Throttle valve at proper idle position.
All electrical consumers (A/C, seat heaters, window defrosters, etc.).
Fuel system pressure gauges not connected.
Radiator fan NOT running while taking readings.
VAG 1367 (or equivalent) connected.

INITIAL SETUP

1.

Perform vehicle self-diagnosis as follows:

a. Switch the ignition OFF.
b. Bridge terminals A1 and B1 with a jumper wire, Fig. 66
c. Switch the ignition ON.
d. After 4 seconds, remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic connectors.
e. Note any fault codes and repair as necessary.

Clamp crankcase ventilation hose closed (located behind the fuel pressure regulator).

2.

Remove the oil dipstick and cover the tube with a rag (to prevent oil spray).

3.

Remove the cap from the exhaust sampling port and connect an exhaust gas analizer.

4.

Start the engine and allow it to idle.

5.

Bridge terminal 1 of diagnostic connector 'A'  and terminal 1 of diagnostic connector 'B' using jumper wire from adapter kit VAG 1594.

NOTE  Diagnostic connectors 'A' and 'B' are located in the recess beneath the shelf in the footwell on the drivers side.

The idle speed should be 800 +/- 30 RPM

If the idle speed is not within specifications, adjust by turning the adjustment screw in the side of the throttle housing.

CO ADJUSTMENT

1.

With the engine at idle, the CO content should be 0.3 to 1.2%.

2.

If the CO content is not within specifications, turn the engine OFF and adjust.

3.

First remove the adjustment screw concealment plug as follows:

a. Loosen the clamps on the intake air boot, and remove the boot.

NOTE; when re-installing the intake air boot, be sure that the boot fully seats into the flange recesses before tightening the clamps.

b. Remove the cable clamp and disconnect the harness plug from the air mass meter.
c. Remove the 4 bolts that mount the air mass meter to the air filter housing.
d. Drill a 2.5 mm (3/32 in.) hole in the adjustment screw concealment plug.
e. Thread in a 3 mm sheet metal screw into the hole, and extract the plug with pliers.
f.

Re-install the air mass meter.

4.

Start the engine and let it idle.  With the engine idling, CO should be 0.3 to 1.2%.

5.

To adjust the CO, turn the adjustment screw in the air mass meter;

Clockwise  to increase CO
Counter-clockwise to decrease CO

6.

After adjusting CO, re-check idle speed and adjust as necessary.

7.

After idle speed and CO are adjusted, disconnect the jumper wire from the diagnostic connectors, and briefly raise the engine speed above 2000
RPM then let it idle.
