EGR Temperature Sensor: Testing and Inspection

    This test need only be performed if fault code 2411 was displayed during vehicle self diagnosis. Only the EGR temperature sensor is tested here. For

1.

Disconnect EGR temperature sensor harness connector.

2.

Connect DVM between terminals of harness side of connector.

3.

Turn ignition ON and note voltage.

Voltage should be approx. 5 volts.

 
If not, check for:

a. Open or short circuit to power or ground in wires between ECU terminals 7A & 8A and temperature sensor harness connector terminals #1 &

#2 respectively.

 
If no wiring problems are found and there is still no voltage present, or if voltage is greater than specified, then the ECU is faulty.

Remove temperature sensor from EGR valve.

5.

Submerge sensor in a pan of boiling water.

6.

When sensor is heated, check resistance between sensor terminals.

Resistance should be between 80,000 and 160,000 ohms.

 
If resistance is not within the specified range, replace sensor.
 

7.

Re-install temperature sensor in EGR valve and connect DVM between its terminals (set to 20K-ohms scale). 

8.

Start engine and run above 2,000 rpm (engine at normal operating temperature.

9.

Using a hand held vacuum pump, apply vacuum to EGR valve diaphragm and note resistance of temperature sensor.

Resistance should be between 1,000 and 19,000 ohms.

 
If not within the specified range, replace sensor.
