Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

     Refer to Fig. 13 during replacement procedures.

1.

Loosen axle nut, then raise and support vehicle.

2.

Remove axle nut, wheel bolts, and wheels.

3.

Remove axle shaft from differential flange, then press ball joint out of bracket using a suitable puller.

4.

Loosen control arm mounting bolts at subframe, then swing control arm downwards.

5.

Remove tie rod using a suitable puller. Install nut on tie rod end to prevent damage to tie rod threads.

6.

Remove parking brake cable grommet from bracket.

7.

Press axle shaft out of hub using tool V.A.G. 1389 or equivalent, angle shaft alongside differential, then remove axle shaft.

8.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replace seal between axle shaft and drive flange, self-locking nuts for lower control arm and tie rod.
b. Apply a 1/4 inch bead of locking compound D6 around the end of splines of stub axles. Allow at least one hour for locking compound to

harden before driving vehicle.

c. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.

9.

Remove lower strut bolt, then the bolt securing trapezoidal arm to wheel bearing housing.

10.

Remove bolt from wheel bearing housing to pivot mount.

11.

Remove wheel bearing housing from axle shaft.

12.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure splines of driveshaft and wheel hub are free of oil, grease and old locking compound.
b. Press speed sensor into wheel housing up to stop by hand.
c. Replace seal between axle shaft and drive flange, self-locking nuts for transverse link and lower strut mounting and bolt securing axle shaft to 

wheel hub.

d. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
