Speedometer Head: Testing and Inspection
Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), Checking

Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), checking 

Location: left side of transmission housing next to drive flange.

- 

Disconnect 3-pin harness connector (arrow) from speedometer VSS.

Note:  The connector is secured to the speedometer VSS with locking clips.

- 

Connect VW 1501 test harness to VSS.

- 

Set digital multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to the 2 kohm resistance measuring range.

- 

Connect multimeter between VW 1501 test harness flat terminal connectors -2- and -3-.

- 

Release parking brake and shift transmission into neutral.

- 

Move vehicle forward or backward slightly.
Specification: alternating between 0 Ohms (continuity) and infinite Ohms (no continuity) 

If specification is not met:
- 

Replace speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

If resistance is OK, and the speedometer is not working:
- 

Measure signal from speedometer VSS signal at instrument cluster.   See: Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Signal, Checking

Once test is complete:
- 

Disconnect VW 1501 test harness and reconnect connector to speedometer VSS.
