Air Bag: Service and Repair
Airbag Unit

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable and cover negative terminal during work on airbag unit.

2.

On models except 1992 100, disconnect RED voltage supply connector marked ``Airbag,'' located under lefthand side of instrument panel on
Coupe Quattro, 80 and 90 models and behind center console on V8 Quattro, 100 and 200 models.

3.

On 1992 100 models, disconnect RED voltage supply connector marked ``Airbag,'' in floor outlet on passenger side above electronic box.

4.

Remove No. 30 torx head screws on both sides of steering wheel, Fig. 2.

5.

Disconnect airbag unit from steering wheel carefully and tilt downward.

6.

Lift up safety clamp, then disconnect electrical connector from airbag unit, Fig. 3.

7.

Do not place removed airbag unit face down on vinyl horn pad side. Audi rings must face upwards.

8.

Connect electrical connector to airbag unit, then position airbag unit in steering wheel.

9.

Fasten clamp securing airbag wiring terminal, then install and torque torx head bolts to 53 inch lbs.

10.

Connect voltage supply connector, then ensure no one is in vehicle and connect battery ground cable.
