Removing and installing Bowden cable for backrest release mechanism
Removing and installing Bowden cable for backrest release mechanism
  Note
The Bowden cable for the backrest release mechanism cannot be removed without destroying it.
Removing
  WARNING
t  Heed the safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to unplug the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery earth wire → Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove the front seat → Chapter.
–  Attach the front seat to the seat repair stand -VAS 6136- → Chapter.
–  Remove the backrest cover with backrest padding:
t  Standard seat → Chapter.
t  Sports seat → Chapter.
t  Super sports seat → Chapter.
  Note
Removal and installation of the Bowden cables do not involve taking out the spring mat or lumbar support.
   
–  Mark the angular position of the backrest fittings on the left and right at the front seat as follows:
–  Make a mark -arrow B- with a waterproof felt-tip pen at the backrest frame -1- right at the front edge -arrow A- of the fitting -5-.
–  Use a screwdriver to prise off the clamping washer -3- and the corrugated washer behind it at the shaft -4-.
–  Detach the adapter -2- for the backrest adjustment knob from the shaft.

–  Pull the shaft -4- as far as it will go out of the backrest frame.
–  Use a screwdriver to release the retainer tabs -1, 2- and unclip the support bracket -3- of the Bowden cable on either side of the backrest frame.
–  Disengage the Bowden cable -5- on both sides of the backrest fitting.

–  Unclip the support bracket -2- from the backrest frame.
–  Disengage the Bowden cable -3- at the lever -1-.
–  Disengage the Bowden cable at the spring mat or lumbar support -arrow- and remove from the backrest frame.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Heed the safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to plug in the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
  Note
Make sure the connectors are pressed on as far as they will go and are heard to engage.
–  Check the locking function of the Bowden cable for the backrest release mechanism.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (airbag, belt tensioner for example) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
–  With the ignition switched on, connect the battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, the event recorder must be interrogated, erased and then interrogated again → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
