Removing
  WARNING
t  Heed the safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to unplug the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
–  Remove the front seat → Chapter.
–  Attach the front seat to the seat repair stand -VAS 6136- → Chapter.
–  Remove the backrest cover with backrest padding → Chapter.
   
–  Disengage the tension springs -1, 2, 3, 6- at the backrest frame -5-.
  Note
The tension springs -1, 2, 3, 6- can also be left attached to the backrest frame -5- and the spring mat -4- disengaged directly at the tension springs.
–  Disengage the Bowden cable -7- for the backrest release mechanism at the spring mat.

–  Swivel the spring mat -2- forwards.
–  Pull the spring mat out of the openings -arrows- of the backrest frame -1-.
Installing
  WARNING
t  Heed the safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
t  Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example to plug in the connector), the person concerned must „discharge static“, for instance by briefly grasping hold of the door striker plate.
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
–  Take care to engage the correct tension spring (number of turns) at the specified location.
  Note
Make sure the connectors are pressed on as far as they will go and are heard to engage.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (airbag, belt tensioner for example) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle when connecting the battery.
–  With the ignition switched on, connect the battery earth wire → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, the event recorder must be interrogated, erased and then interrogated again → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
