Removing and installing selector mechanism

Removing –  Remove gear knob with gear lever boot → Chapter. –  Remove centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove nuts -arrows- securing selector housing to body.

–  Remove air cleaner housing → Injection and ignition system; Rep. gr.24.

–  Remove securing clip -arrow 3-. –  Pull gear selector cable -2- off pin -arrow- on gearbox selector lever -1-. –  Release cable end-piece from gate selector cable as follows:

–  Pull locking mechanism forwards -arrow 1- onto stop and then turn to left -arrow 2- to lock. –  Push gate relay lever forwards in direction of -arrow 3-.

–  Detach cable support bracket from gearbox -arrows-. –  Remove tunnel cross-pieces and disconnect exhaust system at clamp → Rep. gr.26. –  Release underbody trim from body in area of heat shield in centre tunnel → Rep. gr.66. –  Remove heat shield in centre tunnel below selector mechanism → Rep. gr.66.   Note It may be necessary to remove the front exhaust pipe before the heat shield can be removed → Rep. gr.26. –  Swing down selector housing and remove together with cables.

Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Cables from selector mechanism to gearbox must run parallel. –  Insert selector mechanism and tighten nuts -arrows - to specified torque → Item.

–  Apply a small amount of grease -G 000 450 02- to pin -arrow- of gearbox selector lever -1-. –  Push gear selector cable -2- onto pin -arrow- and secure with new securing clip -3-. –  Insert gate selector cable in cable end-piece on gate relay lever.

–  Tighten bolts -arrows- for cable support bracket on gearbox to specified torque → Item. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Install heat shield in centre tunnel and attach underbody trim → Rep. gr.66. –  Install exhaust system and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. gr.26. –  Secure tunnel cross-pieces to body → Rep. gr.26. –  Install centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68. –  Install gear knob with gear lever boot → Chapter. –  Install air cleaner housing → Injection and ignition system; Rep. gr.24.
