Removing and installing battery in engine compartment

Removing
–  Connect battery charger to provide back-up power supply → Electrical system; General information; Rep. gr.27.
–  Disconnect battery → Chapter.
–  Open cover -2- over positive battery terminal.
–  Remove nut -3-.
–  Release retaining tabs -arrow- with a small screwdriver -4-.
–  Detach bracket -1- for fuse holder B from battery and from battery clamp of positive cable and move to one side with wiring attached.

–  Slacken off nut -4- several turns and disconnect battery clamp -3- of positive cable from positive battery terminal.
–  Remove bolt -1- on battery retainer plate -2-.
–  Pull battery -5- out of battery tray and lift out of engine compartment.
  WARNING
Observe environmental requirements.
When disposing of used batteries, always observe the required disposal procedures for batteries and sulphuric acid → Electrical system; General information; Rep. gr.27.
Installing
l  Tightening torques → Chapter
  Note
t  Only install maintenance-free batteries with the specifications „TL82506“ (from December 1997 onwards) and „VW75073“ (from August 2001 onwards).
t  If a leakproof, deep-cycle VRLA or AGM battery was fitted as original equipment, this type of battery must also be installed as a replacement.
t  Batteries from the Audi parts range feature a base strip adapter for matching to different retainer flanges. The battery operating instructions give details of when and how to use the base strip adapter.

–  Insert battery in battery tray so that battery base strip engages in retainer flange of battery tray -arrow-.
l  It should no longer be possible to move the battery.

l  The battery has been properly inserted if the centre recess in the battery base strip aligns with the tapped hole in the battery tray -arrows-.
  N27-0110
–  Fit battery retainer plate -2-.
l  Lug on battery retainer plate must engage in recess on battery base strip.
–  Tighten bolt -1- for battery retainer plate.
–  Connect up battery -5- in the following sequence with ignition and electrical equipment switched off:
–  First connect battery clamp -3- of positive cable by hand to positive battery terminal „+“ and tighten nut -4-.
–  Install bracket for fuse holder B → Chapter.
–  Connect battery → Anchor.
