  WARNING
Always consult current side airbag safety regulations → Chapter.
1 - Backrest cover
t  Removing
–  Remove seat → Chapter.
–  Remove backrest → Chapter.
–  Remove side airbag module → Chapter.
–  Prise cover fastening strip out of backrest cover panel -7-.
–  Unfasten backrest cover panel -7- from clip -6-.
–  Pull out backrest cover panel -7-.
–  Disengage backrest cover at bottom rear.
–  Remove head restraint -8- by pressing button at left rod.
–  Remove head restraint guide -9- → Fig.
–  Lift cover and pinch off -A- staples -5-.
–  Detach padding -2-.
t  Installing
–  Cut out cover on vehicles with side airbag → Chapter.
–  Align cut-out in piping with slot in backrest cover panel → Fig.
–  Use upholstery stapler -V.A.G 1634- to fit new staples.
–  To facilitate installation, push back longitudinal rods as far as first transverse rod.
–  When fitting, staple transverse rods first and then longitudinal rods.
2 - Padding
3 - Backrest heater
q   Backrest heater and cover form one replacement part.
q   Cover must be replaced as well on vehicles with backrest heater.
q   Cut off cable -4- on vehicles with no backrest heater.

6 - Clip
7 - Backrest cover panel
8 - Head restraint
q   Head restraint cannot be dismantled; cover and padding form one replacement part.
Rear outer head restraints are not identical to front head restraints. All head restraints are to be marked with adhesive tape on removal.
