Renewing oil seal together with sleeve (one-piece sleeve and flange shaft oil seal (right-side)) l  → Chapter „Identification of flange shaft oil seals (right-side)“

Special tools and workshop equipment required t  Thrust piece -T10148- t  Spindle from assembly device -3066- t  Multi-purpose tool -VW 771- t  Extractor hook -VW 771/37- t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- l  Gearbox in vehicle Removing –  Remove right wheel.

–  Remove noise insulation (centre) by releasing fasteners -1 ... 3-.

–  Unbolt heat shield for right-side drive shaft -arrows-. –  Turn steering to full right lock.

–  Unbolt drive shaft -1- from flange shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40. –  Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

Vehicles with 1.8 ltr. TFSI engine: –  Remove nuts -arrows- on swivel joint (right-side).

–  Disengage wishbone (right-side) at swivel joint. –  Swivel suspension strut (right-side) outwards and support with -2024 A /1- as shown in illustration.   WARNING Secure locking pin and swivel joint with retaining clip -arrow- and nut -1-.

Continued for all vehicles: –  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Remove securing bolt -arrow- for flange shaft. To do this, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft together with spring, thrust washer and tapered ring.

–  Pull out oil seal with sleeve. A projection is located on inside diameter of sleeve. –  Position puller hook -VW 771/37- directly behind projection in sleeve. –  During this operation, press puller hook -VW 771/37- firmly in against sleeve.

Installing –  Clean seat for oil seal in gearbox. –  Pull in oil seal together with sleeve. A -  Spindle from assembly device -3066- screwed into threaded piece in differential. B -  M12 nut –  Turn nut -B- and pull oil seal with sleeve in onto stop with thrust piece -T10148-. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-. –  Install flange shaft.

–  Press flange shaft in against spring on gearbox housing and secure with countersunk bolt -arrow-. Tightening torque → Item –  Attach swivel joint to wishbone and secure → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40. –  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40. –  Install heat shield for right-side drive shaft. –  Check oil level in gearbox and top up with gear oil if necessary → Chapter. –  Fit right wheel → Rep. gr.44. –  Install noise insulation under engine/gearbox → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. Tightening torque
