Renewing oil seal for vibration damper Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Locking pin -T10060 A-

t  Counterhold tool -T10355-

t  Thrust piece -T10354-

t  Thrust piece -T10368-

t  Extractor tool -T20143-

Removing –  Release fasteners -1 and  2- and remove centre noise insulation.

–  Release fasteners -1, 2, 3- and remove noise insulation (right-side).

Vehicles with auxiliary heater: –  Slacken clip -1- and remove bolt -2-. –  Detach exhaust silencer for auxiliary heater.

All vehicles: –  Remove bolts -arrows-. –  Remove air pipe (lift clips -items 1 and 2-).   Caution If a used belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage. Before removing, mark direction of rotation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tipped pen for re-installation.

–  To slacken poly V-belt turn tensioner in direction of -arrow-. –  Lock tensioner with locking pin -T10060 A- –  Remove poly V-belt from pulley on vibration damper.   Caution Risk of damage to engine. To avoid disturbing valve timing, do not turn crankshaft out of “TDC” position when vibration damper is removed.

–  Turn vibration damper to “TDC” position -arrow- using counterhold tool -T10355-. l  Notch on vibration damper must align with arrow marking on cover for timing chains (bottom). –  Remove bolt for vibration damper using counterhold tool -T10355-.

–  Detach vibration damper and fit thrust piece -T10368- in its place. –  Pull out oil seal using extractor tool -T20143/2-. Installing l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Poly V-belt drive - exploded view“ –  Clean contact surface and sealing surface. –  Remove thrust piece -T10368-.

–  Use thrust piece -T10354- and bolt for vibration damper to pull in oil seal -arrow- onto stop.   Note t  Renew bolt for vibration damper. t  Renew O-ring. Perform further installation in reverse order, paying attention to the following: –  Install vibration damper → Chapter. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
