Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Special wrench, long reach -T40080-
t  Camshaft clamp -T10252-
t  Tensioning bolt -T10092-
t  Pin wrench -T10020-
t  Locking pin -T10115-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

Removing
–  Remove intake manifold → Rep. gr.24.
–  Remove high-pressure pump → Rep. gr.24.
   
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
–  Remove ignition coils with output stages → Rep. gr.24.
–  Loosen cylinder head cover bolts, working from outside inwards, and remove cylinder head cover.

–  Remove camshaft adjuster cover -arrows-.
  N15-10108
–  Align mark on camshaft sprocket with mark on toothed belt cover. The indentations -arrows- face each other.
  N15-10109
–  Fit camshaft clamp -T10252- as shown and secure -arrows-.
–  Loosen securing bolt from camshaft adjuster using special wrench -T40080-.
  Note
Two different types of chain tensioner were employed, depending on production date. For version A use tensioning bolt -T10092-. For version B use locking pin -T10115-.
Version A
  N15-10151
–  Compress chain tensioner and lock with tensioning bolt -T10092- and M5 nut -arrow-.
  N15-10102
–  Remove centre securing bolt of chain tensioner -arrow-.
Version B
  N15-10119
–  Compress chain tensioner -arrow A- and lock with locking pin -T10115--arrow B-.
All vehicles (continued):
–  Remove securing bolt from camshaft adjuster and remove camshaft adjuster together with chain.
Installing
l  Tightening torques → Chapter
  N15-10152
l  The camshafts are located with the camshaft clamp -T10252-.
–  Fit chain onto camshaft adjuster.

–  Position camshaft adjuster in front of exhaust camshaft so that notch -A- and pin -B- face each other.

–  Lay chain over inlet camshaft sprocket starting at top -arrow- without changing its position.

–  Turn inlet camshaft slowly in direction of arrow -A- using pin wrench -T10020- until the camshaft adjuster fits onto the camshaft.
  Note
If it is not possible to fit the pin into the notch: remove chain and fit chain again.
–  Tighten new securing bolt for camshaft adjuster. Use special wrench -T40080- for this purpose.
  Note

Version A

–  Tighten centre securing bolt of chain tensioner -arrow-.
  N15-10119
–  Remove tensioning bolt -T10092--arrow-.
Version A
  N15-10102
–  Remove locking pin -T10115--arrow B-.
All vehicles (continued):
Further assembly is basically carried out in reverse order of dismantling.
