Removing and installing electromechanical steering box
   
Removing and installing electromechanical steering box
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Ball joint puller -3287 A-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

Removing steering box
–  Disconnect battery → Rep. gr.27.
   
–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- and remove footwell trim.

–  Unscrew bolt -1- and detach universal joint -2- from steering box.
–  Remove front wheels.
–  Slacken off nut on track rod ball joint (but do not remove yet).

–  Press track rod ball joint off wheel bearing housing with -3287A-.
–  Detach bottom noise insulation → Rep. gr.50.
–  If fitted, remove frame for noise insulation → Rep. gr.50.
–  If fitted, remove diagonal struts → Chapter.
–  Detach coupling rods from anti-roll bar.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-.
  N40-10005
–  Unscrew bolts -14- and remove pendulum support from gearbox.
–  Detach exhaust system bracket from subframe.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- from heat shield.
–  Remove heat shield from subframe.
  N48-10012
–  Then slacken off bolts -3 and 6- for steering box and bolts -11 and 16- for anti-roll bar.
–  Fix position of subframe and suspension brackets → Chapter.

–  Position engine/gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- beneath subframe.
–  Place a wooden block -1- or similar between V.A.G 1383 A and subframe.

–  Slacken off bolts -4 and 5- and lower subframe with suspension brackets slightly. Pay attention to wiring.

–  Remove heat shield -1- above steering box.
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
  N48-10014
–  Detach cable guide from subframe -arrow-.
–  Unclip all other cable fasteners at steering box.
–  Detach all electrical connections from steering box.
Detach anti-roll bar from subframe, then detach steering box.
Installing steering box
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence.
Threaded sleeves of steering box must be located in subframe holes.
  Note
t  Coat seal on steering box with suitable lubricant, e.g. soft soap, before installing steering box.
t  After positioning steering box in relation to steering column shaft, ensure seal on steering box makes snug contact with base plate, without kinks, and properly seals off opening to footwell. Otherwise, this can result in water leaks and/or noise.
t  Make sure sealing surfaces are clean.
Before fitting bolts for subframe, position steering box on subframe and fit bolts for steering box and anti-roll bar.
–  Secure heat shield to steering box → Item.
–  Secure subframe and suspension brackets to body → Chapter.
–  Secure steering box to subframe → Item.
–  Secure swivel joint to wishbone (bolts on old marks). Tightening torque → Item.
Use new bolts.
  Note
Ensure sealing boot is not damaged or twisted.
–  Secure universal joint to steering box → Item.
After installation, check position of steering wheel by test-driving vehicle.
–  Connect battery → Rep. gr.27.
Perform wheel alignment if the steering wheel is not horizontal, or after installing a new steering box → Chapter.
–  Calibrate steering angle sender -G85- using → Vehicle diagnostic tester → Chapter.
If a new steering box has been installed, the power steering control unit -J500- must be adapted using the → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Perform basic setting for power steering control unit -J500- using → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

–  Connect up → Vehicle diagnostic tester and select „Guided Fault Finding“.

Check toe setting.
