Removing and installing boot > < Servicing electromechanical steering box (generations 2 and 3)

1 - Steering box housing
2 - Track rod
q   100 Nm
q   If defective, also renew track rod ball joint
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
3 - Track rod ball joint (left-side)
q   Check that grease caps are seated correctly and not damaged
4 - Nut
q   50 Nm
q   Counterhold track rod ball joint with spanner when loosening and tightening nut
5 - Spring-type clip
6 - Boot
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Check for damage
q   Must not be twisted when toe setting has been adjusted
7 - Hose clip
q   Always renew if removed
q   Secure new hose clip using locking pliers for steering box -VAS 6199-
8 - Seal
q   Between steering box and vehicle interior
9 - Bolt
q   Secures cover → Item to steering box housing → Item
q   2x
10 - Cover
11 - Seal
12 - Steering pinion with steering moment sender
13 - Sensor wiring
14 - Track rod ball joint (right-side)
q   Check that grease caps are seated correctly and not damaged
15 - Bolt
q   Secures servo motor with control unit → Item to steering box housing → Item
16 - Clamp with nuts
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Always renew if removed
q   Not fitted on vehicles with generation 3 steering box
q   Generation 3 steering box is secured to the housing at this location with a bolt
17 - Rubber bush
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Not fitted on vehicles with generation 3 steering box
18 - Bracket
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Not fitted on vehicles with generation 3 steering box
19 - Seal
20 - Servo motor with control unit
q   With power steering control unit -J500-
q   With electromechanical power steering motor -V187-
q   With steering motor speed sender -G577-
q   Can be checked via „Guided Fault Finding“ with → Vehicle diagnostic tester
21 - Contact sheeting
22 - Hydraulic thrust piece
23 - Seal
q   Fitted on hydraulic thrust piece → Item
24 - Seal
q   Insert into steering box housing (fitted between thrust piece and adjuster screw)
25 - Adjuster screw
q   For hydraulic thrust piece → Item
26 - Rubber plug
27 - Adjuster screw
q   For mechanical thrust piece → Item
28 - Spring
29 - Screw plug
30 - Nut
q   Always renew if removed
31 - Retaining clip
q   Secures sensor wiring → Item to steering box housing → Item
32 - Seal
q   Fitted on mechanical thrust piece → Item
33 - Mechanical thrust piece
