Wheel Bearing: Removal and Replacement
AWD

Wheel Bearing Housing

Different versions: aluminum and steel.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Torque Wrench (VAG 1332)

Removing

-

Measure dimension from center of wheel to lower edge of wheel housing. Refer to => [ Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position ] See: Service and
Repair/Rear Axle in Curb Weight Position.

Loosen outer drive axle threaded connection.

Procedure for loosening the hex combination bolt. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Hex Combination Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] See: Transmission
and Drivetrain/Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle Shaft Assembly/Service and Repair/Procedures/Rear Suspension/Drive Axle Hex Combination
Bolt, Loosening and Tightening.

Procedure for loosening 12-point bolt. Refer to => [ Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening ] See: Transmission and
Drivetrain/Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle Shaft Assembly/Service and Repair/Procedures/Rear Suspension/Drive Axle Twelve-Point Bolt,
Loosening and Tightening.

Remove wheel.

-

Remove coil spring. Refer to => [ Coil Spring ] See: Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf )/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Rear
Suspension/Coil Spring.

Remove brake carrier and brake caliper and tie to body with wire. 

‹› Do not allow brake caliper to hang from brake line.

Remove cover plate.

Remove ABS speed sensor from wheel bearing housing.

-

Remove bolt - 2 - and washer - 1 -. 

The washer - 1 - is installed on vehicles with an aluminum wheel bearing housing.

Remove bolt for tie rod - 1 -, upper transverse link -  2 - and lower transverse link - 3 - from wheel bearing housing - 4 -.
