Vehicle level control system sensors

Vehicles with gas discharge lamps have automatic headlight range control as standard.

In order to function, the automatic headlight range control requires information about the bump and rebound travel of the front and rear axles.

For this purpose the position of the lower left link in relation to the body is transmitted to the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- by means
of an actuating arm. The latter conveys electric signals to the control module for the headlight range control.

At the rear axle, the Left Rear Level Control System Sensor -G76- passes these signals on to the control module.
The signals are required for defining the vehicle level.
The automatic headlight range control reacts automatically to changes in the vehicle level.

The vehicle level can change as a result of the following situations:

Trailer operation

Different payloads; vehicle empty, vehicle partially or fully loaded

^

Slow or fast driving style

Note:  The basic headlight setting must always be checked if:

Link has been removed and installed or replaced

^

Vehicle Level Control System Sensor has been subject to repair work

^

Vehicle Level Control System Sensor has been replaced

^

Clip securing actuating arm to link has been opened

Basic headlight setting
 Go to Guided Fault Finding in VAS 5051; automatic headlight range control; Basic Setting
1. Hex bolt
2. Bracket
3. Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78-

Checked by On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

In the event of complaints:
Go to Guided Fault Finding in VAS 5051; automatic headlight range control

4. Self-locking nut, 10 Nm

Always replace after removing

5. Actuating arm of Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78-

Do not disconnect actuating arm from ball end.

6. Clip

^

Clip lock on track control link must face upward and backward as seen in direction of travel.

7. Hex bolt
8. Blind rivet nut

Note:

Remove the metal clip when removing and installing the track control link.

^

Use an open-ended 10 mm wrench with dimension -A- = 4 mm for attaching the actuating arm to the level sensor and avoid damaging the seal.
