Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Service and Repair
Rear Gas-Filled Shock Absorbers, Releasing Gas
Rear gas-filled shock absorbers, releasing gas
-
A - Drilling open
-
Clamp gas-filled shock absorber vertically in vice with piston rod facing downward.
WARNING!:
Wear safety glasses while drilling.
-
Drill a 3 mm diameter hole (arrow -A-) through outer tube of shock absorber.
Note:
Gas escapes while drilling.
-
Keep drilling until inner tube is penetrated (approx. 25 mm deep).
-
Drill a second 6 mm diameter hole (arrow -B-) through outer and inner tube of shock absorber.
-
Hold shock absorber over a drip tray and execute full piston rod stroke several times until no further oil emerges.
-
B - Opening with pipe cutter
Special tools and equipment
-
Pipe cutter, e.g. Stahlwille Express 150/3
WARNING!:
Wear safety glasses while drilling or sawing.
-
Drill a 3 mm diameter hole (arrow) through outer tube of shock absorber/saw through tube wall.
Note:
Gas escapes while drilling/sawing.
-
Position pipe cutter (e.g. Stahlwille Express 150/3) as shown and cut through outer tube.
-
Pull up piston rod; in doing so, hold inner tube with pliers and press tube downward so that it remains in outer tube while piston rod is slowly
pulled up.
-
Pull piston rod off inner tube.
