Servicing airbag (front passenger side) > < Removing and installing airbag unit (RS 4)

A4 Cabriolet Mk2

Removing and installing return ring with with slip ring (coil connector / ESP sensor)
Removing and installing return ring with with slip ring (coil connector / ESP sensor)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Special screwdriver T8 -T40056-
t  Removing:
–  Remove airbag unit (driver side):
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (standard steering wheel)“
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (sports steering wheel)“
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (multi-function steering wheel)“
t  → Chapter „Removing and installing airbag unit (RS 4)“
–  Remove steering wheel → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.48.
–  Pull steering column out and tilt downwards as far as it will go.
   
–  Remove Torx bolts using special screwdriver T8 -T40056--3- and -5- as well as hexagon socket head bolt -4-.
–  Tightening torque: 1 Nm
–  Separate upper trim -2- for steering column switch from lower trim -1- and detach both sections.
When installing, insert trim (top) in hooks of trim (bottom), press both sections together and bolt on.

–  Unplug connector -1-.
–  Carefully release retaining hooks -arrows- and detach return ring with slip ring from steering column switch.
t  Installing:
–  Make sure all three retaining hooks and connector are properly engaged.
  Note
t  Return ring with slip ring should only be removed and installed in centre position (wheels in straight-ahead position).
t  A new return ring with slip ring is secured in centre position with a cable tie or tear-off ring.
t  ESP sensor must be calibrated on vehicles with ESP sensor in return ring with slip ring.
Refer to Guided Fault Finding, running gear, brake system, 01 systems with self-diagnosis capability Bosch 5 7, anti-lock brake System ABS EDS ASR ESP, SYS45 Basic setting steering angle sensor.
