Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Piston compressing and extracting tool -3272- or
t  Piston compressing tool -T10165-
t  Torque wrench -VAS 5820-
t  Ratchet -V.A.G 1410/3-
t  Socket -T40027-
Removing
  Note
Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reinstalled. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove wheels.
   
–  Remove securing bolts from brake caliper housing, when doing this counter-hold on guide pins.
  Note
On RS 4 models (type No. 8EC) do not slacken top securing bolt with damper weight. Just pivot caliper upwards in order to change brake pads.
  Note
To renew the lower brake caliper bolt on quattro versions, first disengage the brake cable.

–  Pull out retaining clip -1- and unhook handbrake cables at brake caliper.
–  Take off brake caliper housing and lay to one side so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.

–  Remove brake pads.
–  Remove guide clips.
–  Take brake pads out of housing.
–  Clean brake caliper housing, in particular contact surface for brake pad.
Only use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.
  Note
Before inserting new brake pads, press piston back into cylinder with resetting appliance. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped up.
  WARNING
Brake fluid is poisonous and must NOT be sucked through a hose with the mouth.
Installing
Only use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.

–  Screw in piston by turning piston compressing and extracting tool -3272- clockwise.

–  Insert pad retaining springs.

–  Fit brake pads.

–  Ensure that the brake pads are located correctly in the pad retainers -arrows-.
  Note
The repair kit includes four self-locking hexagon bolts which must be installed in all cases.

–  Secure brake caliper housing with new self-locking bolts.
–  Make sure not to twist the brake hose when installing.
–  Tighten bolts on brake caliper housing (35 Nm).
–  Install brake cable.
  Note
After each brake pad change firmly depress brake pedal several times with vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
–  Install wheels → Wheels and tyres; Rep. Gr.44.
–  Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
