Special tools, testers and other items required
Special tools, testers and other items required
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- e.g. with diagnostic wire -VAS 5051/5A- and K-wire adapter -VAS 6017B- (or K-wire adapter -VAS 6017A-)
t  Minitester -V.A.G 1362- (for temperature measurement) or commercially available thermometer
Test requirements
t  Ambient temperature above 15 ° C
t  Radiator and condenser clean (clean if necessary)
t  Poly V-belt for compressor drive OK and correctly tensioned, pulley actually driving compressor (not for vehicles with 8-cyl. engine)
t  Compressor drive unit (connection between compressor and engine) properly fitted (vehicles with 8-cyl. engine only → Chapter)
t  All air ducts, covers and seals OK and properly fitted
t  Air flow through dust and pollen filter not impeded by contamination
t  Vehicle not exposed to sunlight
t  Engine warm
t  Fault memory interrogated → Chapter, all displayed faults eliminated and fault memory erased → Chapter
t  Encoding checked and corrected if necessary → Chapter and reading measured value block → Chapter
t  Basic setting performed → Chapter
t  All dash panel vents open
t  Bonnet closed
t  Settings on operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-:
–  “Auto” mode
–  “LO” temperature setting (for driver's and passenger's side)
–  Compressor on (lamp in Econ button not lit)
t  Functions with engine running (and air conditioner switched on):
–  The radiator fan(s) -V7- run(s) or is/are activated as soon as a certain pressure is exceeded in the refrigerant circuit (the speed depends on the pressure in the refrigerant circuit and the engine temperature).
  Note
Depending on the version of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the radiator fan is either switched on immediately in air conditioning mode when the compressor is activated or the radiator fan is only actuated on exceeding a pressure of approx. 9 bar in the refrigerant circuit.
–  Operation of fresh air blower -V2- at maximum speed
–  Switching of air conditioner to recirculated-air mode (approx. 1 minute after starting vehicle, fresh-air/air flow flaps are closed and recirculated-air flap opened, air is drawn in by fresh air blower -V2- from passenger's footwell)
  Note
If one of these test requirements is not fulfilled, interrogate fault memory → Chapter and perform final control diagnosis → Chapter.
