Safety precautions when working on vehicles fitted with auxiliary heater
t  The auxiliary heater (supplementary heater) is not to be switched on or operated in fire and explosion hazard areas (deactivate supplementary heater e.g. by pressing the “Econ” or “OFF” button at the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- of the air conditioner or heater).
t  The auxiliary heater is not to be switched on or operated in enclosed areas without the use of an exhaust gas extractor.
t  Pay attention to the appropriate safety regulations when working on the fuel system. → Fuel supply system; Rep. Gr.20
t  The engine is not to be started if parts of the fuel system (e.g. metering pump -V54-, fuel pipe or fuel gauge sender) have been removed or opened.
t  Before starting repair work on auxiliary heater:
–  Dissipate the pressure in the cooling system by opening the cap on the coolant expansion tank.
–  Interrupt the power and fuel supply for the auxiliary heater (e.g. by removing the auxiliary heater fuse). → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  On completion of repairs to the auxiliary heater or fuel system check operation of the auxiliary heater.
t  Perform self-diagnosis on completion of auxiliary heater repair work.
t  Avoid repeated activation of the auxiliary heater without intermediate heating operation (repeated deactivation of the auxiliary heater during the start sequence can cause fuel to accumulate in the combustion chamber and result in intense auxiliary heater smoke generation on subsequent attempted starting).
