Removing
–  If fitted, loosen quick-release fasteners -3- and remove rear noise insulation -B-.

–  Detach drive shaft noise insulation (left-side) from wheel housing -arrows-.

–  Unbolt heat shield for drive shaft (left-side) -arrows- (3 bolts).
–  Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.26.

–  Unscrew nut -1- and pull gearbox selector lever -2- off gearbox selector shaft.

–  Carefully lever out oil seal with extractor tool -T20143/1-, taking care not to damage selector shaft.
l  Check selector shaft for damage.

Installing
–  To avoid damaging oil seal -C-, always use assembly sleeve -01E 311 120--A- when installing oil seal and selector shaft.
  V34-2598
–  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal.

–  Drive oil seal -arrow- into housing as far as it will go.

–  Secure gearbox selector lever with nut -1-. Tightening torque → Item
The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following points:
–  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.26.
–  Check gear oil level in gearbox → Chapter.
