Airbag safety precautions
Safety precautions when working on airbag
  • ◆ Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
  • ◆ Never perform tests with a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter.
  • ◆ The airbag system may only be checked with fault reader V.A.G 1551/1552 and when installed.
  • ◆ When working on the airbag system, the battery earth strap must be disconnected.
    No waiting period is required after disconnecting the battery.
    Ensure there is no-one in the vehicle when connecting the airbag system to a voltage source.
  • ◆ Always observe the following sequence when replacing an airbag unit:
  •     1 -    Remove old airbag unit and place down with padding facing upwards; with head airbag observe procedure for head airbag
  •     2 -    Take new airbag unit from transport container and store with padding facing upwards; with head airbag observe procedure for head airbag
  •     3 -    Immediately place old airbag unit into transport container.
  •     4 -    Install new airbag unit into vehicle.
  • ◆ The airbag units should be installed immediately after removing them from their transport containers.
  • ◆ If work is interrupted, the airbag unit should be replaced in its transport container.
  • ◆ The airbag units must not be left unattended.
  • ◆ Airbag units which have been removed should be stored so that the padded side is facing upwards.
  • ◆ Never open or repair airbag components. Always use new components only.
  • ◆ Airbag units which are dropped on a hard surface or are damaged must not be used.
  • ◆ The interval for replacing the airbag units no longer applies.
  • ◆ Airbag units which were not triggered must be marked and be sent back to manufacturer for disposal (use transport containers for airbag units).
  • ◆ Never treat airbag units with grease, cleaning agents or similar; never expose an airbag unit (even for brief periods) to temperatures in excess of 100 °C.
