• ‒ Drain ATF.
• ‒ Remove gearbox .
• ‒ Take out torque converter.
• ‒ Secure gearbox to repair stand
• ‒ Remove valve body => Page 38-38.

• ‒ → Take out sealing plug -arrow-.
• ‒ Remove gearbox speed sender -G38.

Note:

The sealing plug and gearbox speed sender must be removed to prevent them from being damaged.

• ‒ → Remove sealing cap.

• ‒ → Remove bolts -arrows- for ATF pump.

• ‒ → To remove ATF pump screw in two M8 bolts -A- into the tapped holes of the ATF pump.
• ‒ Tighten the bolts -A- evenly to press ATF pump off gearbox housing and remove.
• ‒ Remove gasket, retaining ring and shim

• ‒ → Remove strainer if fitted.

Note:

The strainer is located in the return pipe of the ATF cooler. It cannot be retrofitted on earlier gearbox versions.

• ‒ → Take hold of turbine shaft and pull out all the clutches together with supporting tube for -B2-, -B2- plates, springs and spring caps -arrow-.

Notes:

• ◆ On some gearboxes the clutches -K1- and -K3- may be pressed together.
• ◆ -K1- only has to be pressed off from -K3- if one of the clutches is being dismantled or renewed.
• ◆ Pressing -K1- off -K3- => Page 37-96.

• ‒ Engage parking lock.
• ‒ → To slacken the bolt for the small input shaft, insert a screwdriver through one of the holes of the large sun gear.

Note:

If it is not possible to engage the parking lock, use a second screwdriver to hold the large input shaft.

• ‒ → Loosen bolt -1- for "small input shaft".
• ‒ Remove bolt with washer -2- and shim -3- for "small input shaft".
• ‒ Pull out small input shaft.

Note:

The axial needle bearing for the planet carrier remains in the gearbox/input gear.

• ‒ → Pull out large input shaft (arrow).

• ‒ → Pull out large sun gear (arrow).

• ‒ → Remove circlip -a- for supporting tube for -B2-.

• ‒ → Pull off baffle block -2-.
• ‒ Remove free wheel circlip -b-.
• ‒ Take freewheel out of gearbox housing by pulling on freewheel retaining wedge -arrow- with pliers.

Gearboxes with code letters DMU,DMV,DMX, EPT, EPU, EPV:

• ‒ → Take small sun gear with washer and axial needle bearing out of planet carrier.

•     1 -    Axial needle bearing
•     2 -    Washer for axial needle bearing
•     3 -    Small sun gear
•     4 -    Planet carrier

Gearboxes with other code letters:

• ‒ → Remove axial bearing and washer from small sun gear of planet carrier.

•     1 -    Axial needle bearing
•     2 -    Washer for axial needle bearing
•     3 -    Planet carrier (with integrated small sun gear)

All models

• ‒ Take hold of the inside of the planet carrier and pull it out together with free wheel and dished washer.
• ‒ Remove pressure plate, plates and shim(s) of the reverse gear brake -B1-.
• ‒ Take off axial bearing and washers.

Note:

Assembling planetary gearbox => Page 37-97.

Pressing clutch -K1- off -K3-

Notes:

• ◆ On some gearboxes the clutches -K1- and -K3- may be pressed together.
• ◆ -K1- only has to be pressed off from -K3- if one of the clutches is being dismantled or renewed.

• ‒ Ensure the tool press surface is flat and not damaged.
• ‒ The stud in tube 3110 points towards thrust plate VW 402.
• ‒ → Hold turbine shaft when pressing off.

Note:

Pressing -K1- onto -K3-.
