Removing and installing camshaft
  • ● Cylinder head installed
  • ● Lock carrier must be in service position .

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Counter-hold tool 3036

Removing

  • ‒ Remove upper toothed belt guard.
  • ‒ Loosen bolt for camshaft sprocket (counter-hold with 3036).

  • ‒ → Set crankshaft to mark for TDC of No. 1 cylinder -arrows- by turning central bolt on crankshaft sprocket in direction of rotation .....
 
A13-0077
  • ‒ → .... mark on camshaft sprocket should then align with mark on toothed belt guard. If not, turn crankshaft one turn further.

  • ‒ → Release tensioner -arrows- and remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Remove cylinder head cover .
  • ‒ Pull off camshaft sprocket.
  • ‒ Remove woodruff key from camshaft.
  • ‒ First remove bearing caps 1, 3 and 5. Loosen bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and diagonally.

Installing

Notes:

 
V15-0098
  • ◆ Renew camshaft oil seal.
  • ◆ When installing the camshaft No. 1 cylinder cams must point upwards.
  • ◆ → When installing the bearing cap note offset, before installing camshaft fit bearing caps and determine fitting position.
  • ‒ Oil camshaft running surfaces.
  • ‒ Tighten bearing caps 2 and 4 alternately and
    diagonally to 20 Nm.
  • ‒ Install bearing caps 5, 1 and 3 and also tighten to 20 Nm.
  • ‒ Insert woodruff key in camshaft.
 
A13-0168
  • ‒ → Install camshaft sprocket.
    • ‒ Check installation position:
      The narrow web of the camshaft sprocket faces outwards -arrows- and the marking for No.1 cylinder TDC is visible from the front.
  • ‒ Install securing bolt for camshaft sprocket (hold in place with counterhold tool 3036).
  • ‒ Install toothed belt (adjust valve timing)
    => Page 13-35.

Notes:

  • ◆ Follow all instructions for removing and installing toothed belt .
  • ◆ After installing the camshaft, wait for about 30 minutes before starting the engine. The hydraulic tappets must be allowed to settle, otherwise the valves will contact the pistons.
  • ◆ After working on the valve gear, turn the engine carefully at least 2 rotations to ensure that none of the valves make contact when the starter is operated.
  • ‒ Install cylinder head cover .
